The Bible in Its Traditions

Joshua 5:13–15

13  And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand; and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him: 'Art thou for us, or for our adversaries?'

13  And when Joshua was in the field of the city of Jericho, he lifted up his eyes, and he saw a man standing opposite him, holding a drawn sword. And he went to him and said, “Are you one of ours, or one of our adversaries?”

14  And he said: 'Nay, but I am captain of the host of YHWH; I am now come.' And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and bowed down, and said unto him: 'What saith my lord unto his servant?'

14  And he said to him, I am now come, the chief captain of the host of the Lord.

15  And Joshua fell on his face upon the earth, and said to him, Lord, what commandest thou thy servant?

14  And he responded: “Not at all. Instead, I am a prince of the host of the Lord, and now I have arrived.”

15  Joshua fell prone on the ground. And reverencing, he said, “What does my lord say to his servant?”

15  And the captain of YHWH'S host said unto Joshua: 'Put off thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy.' And Joshua did so.

15  He said: “Remove your shoes from your feet. For the place on which you stand is holy.” And Joshua did just as he had been commanded.
