1 Thus saith YHWH: Behold, I will raise up against Babylon, and against them that dwell in Leb-kamai, a destroying wind.
Jer28:1 Thus saith the Lord; Behold, I stir up against Babylon, and against the Chaldeans dwelling therein, a deadly burning wind.
1 Thus says the Lord: “Behold, I will raise up, over Babylon and over its inhabitants, who have lifted up their heart against me, something like a pestilent wind.
2 And I will send unto Babylon strangers, that shall fan her, and they shall empty her land; for in the day of trouble they shall be against her round about.
2 And I will send winnowers into Babylon, and they will winnow her, and they will demolish her land. For they will overwhelm her from every side in the day of her affliction.
3 Let the archer bend his bow against her, and let him lift himself up against her in his coat of mail; and spare ye not her young men, destroy ye utterly all her host.
3 Let him who draws the bow, not draw his bow. And let him who wears armor, not rise up. Do not spare her young men. Destroy her entire military.
3 The archer shall not cease from bending his bow, and the warrior shall not put off his breastplate; spare not her young men; destroy utterly all her host.
4 And they shall fall down slain in the land of the Chaldeans, and thrust through in her streets.
Jer28:4 And slain men shall fall in the land of the Chaldeans, and men pierced through shall fall without it.
5 For Israel is not widowed, nor Judah, of his God, of YHWH of hosts; for their land is full of guilt against the Holy One of Israel.
Jer28:5 For Israel and Juda have not been forsaken of their God, of the Lord Almighty; whereas their land was filled with iniquity against the holy things of Israel.
5 Yet Israel and Judah have not been widowed by their God, the Lord of hosts, though their land has been filled with transgression against the Holy One of Israel.
6 Flee out of the midst of Babylon, and save every man his life, be not cut off in her iniquity; for it is the time of YHWH'S vengeance; He will render unto her a recompense.
Jer28:6 Flee ye out of the midst of Babylon, and deliver every one his soul: and be not overthrown in her iniquity; for it is the time of her retribution from the Lord; he is rendering to her a recompence.
6 Flee from the midst of Babylon! And let each one save his own life. Do not be silent about her iniquity. For it is the time of revenge from the Lord. He himself will repay her, in her turn.
7 Babylon hath been a golden cup in YHWH'S hand, that made all the earth drunken; the nations have drunk of her wine, therefore the nations are mad.
Jer28:7 Babylon has been a golden cup in the Lord’s hand, causing all the earth to be drunken: the nations have drunk of her wine; therefore they were shaken.
7 Babylon is a gold cup in the hand of the Lord, inebriating the entire earth. The nations have drunk from her wine, and therefore they have staggered.
8 Babylon is suddenly fallen and destroyed, wail for her; take balm for her pain, if so be she may be healed.
Jer28:8 And Babylon is fallen suddenly, and is broken to pieces: lament for her; take balm for her deadly wound, if by any means she may be healed.
8 Suddenly, Babylon has fallen and been crushed. Wail over her! Take a balm to her pain, if perhaps she may be healed.”
9 We would have healed Babylon, but she is not healed; forsake her, and let us go every one into his own country; for her judgment reacheth unto heaven, and is lifted up even to the skies.
Jer28:9 We tried to heal Babylon, but she was not healed: let us forsake her, and depart every one to his own country: for her judgement has reached to the heaven, it has mounted up to the stars.
9 “We would have cured Babylon, but there is no cure. Let us abandon her, and let each one of us go to his own land. For her judgment has reached even to the heavens, and has been lifted up even to the clouds.
10 YHWH hath brought forth our victory; come, and let us declare in Zion the work of YHWH our God.
Jer28:10 The Lord has brought forth his judgement: come, and let us declare in Sion the works of the Lord our God.
10 The LORD has made evident our innocence; come, let us declare in Zion the works of the LORD our God.
11 Make bright the arrows, fill the quivers, YHWH hath roused the spirit of the kings of the Medes; because His device is against Babylon, to destroy it; for it is the vengeance of the YHWH, the vengeance of His temple.
12 Set up a standard against the walls of Babylon, make the watch strong, set the watchmen, prepare the ambushes; for YHWH hath both devised and done that which He spoke concerning the inhabitants of Babylon.
Jer28:12 Lift up a standard on the walls of Babylon, prepare the quivers, rouse the guards, prepare the weapons: for the Lord has taken the work in hand, and will execute what he has spoken against the inhabitants of Babylon,
13 O thou that dwellest upon many waters, abundant in treasures, thine end is come, the measure of thy covetousness.
Jer28:13 dwelling on many waters, and amidst the abundance of her treasures; thine end is come verily into thy bowels.
13 You who live above many waters, rich in treasures: your end has arrived, your measure has been cut short.
14 YHWH of hosts hath sworn by Himself: Surely I will fill thee with men, as with the canker-worm, and they shall lift up a shout against thee.
Jer28:14 For the Lord has sworn by his arm, saying, I will fill thee with men as with locusts; and they that come down shall cry against thee.
14 The Lord of hosts has sworn by himself, saying: “For I will fill you with men as with locusts, and they will sing a rhythmic chant against you.”
15 He that hath made the earth by His power, that hath established the world by His wisdom, and hath stretched out the heavens by His discernment;
Jer28:15 The Lord made the earth by his power, preparing the world by his wisdom, by his understanding he stretched out the heaven.
15 The One who made the earth by his strength, who prepared the world by his wisdom, and who stretched out the heavens by his prudence
16 At the sound of His giving a multitude of waters in the heavens, He causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; He maketh lightnings at the time of the rain, and bringeth forth the wind out of His treasuries;
Jer28:16 At his voice he makes a sound of water in the heaven, and brings up clouds from the extremity of the earth; he makes lightnings for rain, and brings light out of his treasures.
16 when he utters his voice, the waters will be multiplied in the heavens. The One who lifts up the clouds from the ends of the earth: he has turned lightning into rain, and he has brought forth wind from his storehouses.
17 Every man is proved to be brutish, for the knowledge--every goldsmith is put to shame by the graven image--that his molten image is falsehood, and there is no breath in them.
Jer28:17 Every man has completely lost understanding; every goldsmith is confounded because of his graven images: for they have cast false gods, there is no breath in them.
17 Each man has become foolish before his own knowledge. Each sculptor has been confounded by his own sculpture. For what he has formed of them is a lie, and there is no spirit in them.
18 They are vanity, a work of delusion; in the time of their visitation they shall perish,
18 They are worthless, the works of fools; in the time of punishment they shall perish.
19 The portion of Jacob is not like these; for He is the former of all things, and Israel is the tribe of His inheritance; YHWH of hosts is His name.
Jer28:19 Not such is Jacob’s portion; for he that formed all things, he is his inheritance; the Lord is his name.
