Genesis 35:1–29

M G S Sam
V

And God said unto Jacob: 'Arise, go up to Beth-el, and dwell there; and make there an altar unto God, who appeared unto thee when thou didst flee from the face of Esau thy brother.'

About this time, God said to Jacob, “Arise and go up to Bethel, and live there, and make an altar to God, who appeared to you when you fled from your brother Esau.”

Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him: 'Put away the strange gods that are among you, and purify yourselves, and change your garments;

And Jacob said to his house, and to all that were with him, Remove the strange gods that are with you from the midst of you, and purify yourselves, and change your clothes.

In truth, Jacob, having called together all his house, said: “Cast away the foreign gods that are in your midst and be cleansed, and also change your garments.

and let us arise, and go up to Beth-el; and I will make there an altar unto God, who answered me in the day of my distress, and was with me in the way which I went.'

And let us rise and go up to Baethel, and let us there make an alter to God who hearkened to me in the day of calamity, who was with me, and preserved me throughout in the journey, by which I went.

Arise, and let us go up to Bethel, so that we may make an altar there to God, who heeded me in the day of my tribulation, and who accompanied me on my journey.”

And they gave unto Jacob all the foreign gods which were in their hand, and the rings which were in their ears; and Jacob hid them under the terebinth which was by Shechem.

Therefore, they gave him all the foreign gods which they had, and the earrings which were in their ears. And then he buried them under the terebinth tree, which is beyond the city of Shechem.

And they journeyed; and a terror of God was upon the cities that were round about them, and they did not pursue after the sons of Jacob.

So Israel departed from Secima, and the fear of God was upon the cities round about them, and they did not pursue after the children of Israel.

And when they had set out, the terror of God invaded all the surrounding cities, and they dared not pursue them as they withdrew.

So Jacob came to Luz, which is in the land of Canaan--the same is Beth-el--he and all the people that were with him.

And Jacob came to Luza, which is in the land of Chanaan, which is Baethel, he and all the people that were with him.

And so, Jacob arrived at Luz, which is in the land of Canaan, also named Bethel: he and all the people with him.

And he built there an altar, and called the place El-beth-el, because there God was revealed unto him, when he fled from the face of his brother.

And he built an altar there, and he called the name of that place, ‘House of God.’ For there God appeared to him when he fled from his brother.

And Deborah Rebekah's nurse died, and she was buried below Beth-el under the oak; and the name of it was called Allon- bacuth.

About the same time, Deborah, the nurse of Rebekah, died, and she was buried at the base of Bethel, under an oak tree. And the name of that place was called, ‘Oak of Weeping.’

Then Deborah Rebekah's nurse died, and she was buried below Bethel under an oak; so the name of the oak was called Betemtha dabkhatha (the oak of weeping).

And God appeared unto Jacob again, when he came from Paddan-aram, and blessed him.

And God appeared to Jacob once more in Luza, when he came out of Mesopotamia of Syria, and God blessed him.

Then God appeared again to Jacob, after he returned from Mesopotamia of Syria, and he blessed him,

10  And God said unto him: 'Thy name is Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name'; and He called his name Israel.

10  saying: “You will no longer be called Jacob, for your name shall be Israel.” And he called him Israel,

10  And God said to him. Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name; so he called his name Israel.

11  And God said unto him: 'I am God Almighty. Be fruitful and multiply; a nation and a company of nations shall be of thee, and kings shall come out of thy loins;

11  and he said to him: “I am Almighty God: increase and multiply. Tribes and peoples of nations will be from you, and kings will go forth from your loins.

12  and the land which I gave unto Abraham and Isaac, to thee I will give it, and to thy seed after thee will I give the land.'

12  And the land that I gave to Abraham and Isaac, I will give to you, and to your offspring after you.”

13  And God went up from him in the place where He spoke with him.

13  And he withdrew from him.

14  And Jacob set up a pillar in the place where He spoke with him, a pillar of stone, and he poured out a drink-offering thereon, and poured oil thereon.

14  In truth, he set up a monument of stone, in the place where God had spoken to him, pouring out libations over it, and pouring oil,

15  And Jacob called the name of the place where God spoke with him, Beth-el.

15  and he called the name of that place, ‘Bethel.’

16  And they journeyed from Beth-el; and there was still some way to come to Ephrath; and Rachel travailed, and she had hard labour.

16  And Jacob removed from Baethel, and pitched his tent beyond the tower of Gader, and it came to pass when he drew nigh to Chabratha, to enter into Ephratha, Rachel travailed; and in her travail she was in hard labour.

16  Then, departing from there, he arrived in springtime at the land that leads to Ephrath. And there, when Rachel was giving birth,

17  And it came to pass, when she was in hard labour, that the mid-wife said unto her: 'Fear not; for this also is a son for thee.'

17  because it was a difficult birth, she began to be in danger. And the midwife said to her, “Do not be afraid, for you will have this son also.”

18  And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing--for she died--that she called his name Ben-oni; but his father called him Benjamin.

18  Then, when her life was departing because of the pain, and death was now imminent, she called the name of her son Benoni, that is, the son of my pain. Yet truly, his father called him Benjamin, that is, the son of the right hand.

19  And Rachel died, and was buried in the way to Ephrath--the same is Beth-lehem.

19  So Rachel died, and was buried in the way of the course of Ephratha, this is Bethleem.

19  And so Rachel died, and she was buried in the way that leads to Ephrath: this place is Bethlehem.

20  And Jacob set up a pillar upon her grave; the same is the pillar of Rachel's grave unto this day.

20  And Jacob erected a monument over her sepulcher. This is the monument to Rachel’s tomb, even to the present day.

21  And Israel journeyed, and spread his tent beyond Migdal-eder.

21  And it came to pass when Israel dwelt in that land, that Ruben went and lay with Balla, the concubine of his father Jacob; and Israel heard, and the thing appeared grievous before him.

21  Departing from there, he pitched his tent beyond the Tower of the Flock.

22  And it came to pass, while Israel dwelt in that land, that Reuben went and lay with Bilhah his father's concubine; and Israel heard of it. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve

22  And the sons of Jacob were twelve.

22  And when he was living in that region, Reuben went out, and he slept with Bilhah the concubine of his father, which was not such a small matter as to be hidden from him. Now the sons of Jacob were twelve.

27  And Jacob came unto Isaac his father to Mamre, to Kiriatharba--the same is Hebron--where Abraham and Isaac sojourned.

27  And Jacob came to Isaac his father to Mambre, to a city of the plain; this is Chebron in the land of Chanaan, where Abraam and Isaac sojourned.

27  And then he went to his father Isaac in Mamre, the city of Arba: this place is Hebron, where Abraham and Isaac sojourned.

29  And Isaac expired, and died, and was gathered unto his people, old and full of days; and Esau and Jacob his sons buried him.

29  And being consumed by old age, he died. And he was placed with his people, being old and full of days. And his sons, Esau and Jacob, buried him.

29  Then Isaac grew weak and died; and he was gathered to his people, being very old and full of days; and his sons Esau and Jacob buried him in the burial ground which his father Abraham had purchased.
