1 Now traveling through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.
1 Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where was a synagogue of the Jews
1 They passed by the cities of Am-phipÆolis and Ap-ol-loÆni-a, and came to Thessa- lo-niÆca, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.
2 And according to Paul's custom, he went in to them, and for three Sabbaths he reasoned with them from the Scriptures,
2 and Paul, as his custom was, went in unto them, and for three sabbath days reasoned with them from the Scriptures,
2 Then Paul, according to custom, entered to them. And for three Sabbaths he disputed with them about the Scriptures,
3 interpreting and pointing out that it was necessary for the Christ to suffer, and to arise from the dead, and [saying ]that "This is the Christ, Jesus, whom I proclaim to you."
3 opening and alleging that it behooved the Christ to suffer, and to rise again from the dead; and that this Jesus, whom, [said he,] I proclaim unto you, is the Christ.
3 Interpreting and proving that Christ had to suffer, and rise again from the dead; and that he is the same Jesus Christ whom I preach to you.
4 And some of them were persuaded and were joined with Paul and Silas, both of the devout Greeks, a great multitude, and not a few of the chief women.
4 And some of them believed and joined Paul and Silas; and many of them were Greeks who feared God, and many of them were well known women, a goodly number.
5 And the Jews who did not believe [ ]took some wicked men from the marketplace, and forming a mob, [they ]threw the city into disorder, and came upon the house of Jason, and sought to bring them to the people.
5 But the Jews, being moved with jealousy, took unto them certain vile fellows of the rabble, and gathering a crowd, set the city on an uproar; and assaulting the house of Jason, they sought to bring them forth to the people.
6 But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brothers to the rulers of the city, crying out, "The men who have upset the whole world, these have come here, too;
6 And when they found them not, they dragged Jason and certain brethren before the rulers of the city, crying, These that have turned the world upside down are come hither also;
6 And when they failed to find them there, they dragged forth Jason and the brethren who were there and brought them before the authorities of the city, crying, These are the men who have created disturbances throughout the world, and behold, they have come here also,
7 whom Jason has received; and these all practice contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying there is another king-Jesus."
7 and Jason has received them. And all these men act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.”
8 And they troubled the crowd and the rulers of the city when they heard these things.
8 The authorities of the city and all the people were alarmed when they heard these things.
9 And having taken the security bond from Jason and the rest, they released them.
9 And when they had taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.
9 So they took bail from Jason and some of the brethren and then let them go.
