1 And Samuel said unto all Israel: 'Behold, I have hearkened unto your voice in all that ye said unto me, and have made a king over you.
1 Then Samuel said to all of Israel: “Behold, I have listened to your voice, according to all that you have said to me, and I have appointed a king over you.
2 And now, behold, the king walketh before you; and I am old and grayheaded; and, behold, my sons are with you; and I have walked before you from my youth unto this day.
2 And now the king advances before you. But I am old and have gray hair. Moreover, my sons are with you. And so, having conversed before you from my youth, even until this day, behold, I am here.
3 Here I am; witness against me before YHWH, and before His anointed: whose ox have I taken? or whose ass have I taken? or whom have I defrauded? or whom have I oppressed? or of whose hand have I taken a ransom to blind mine eyes therewith? and I will restore it you.'
3 Speak about me before the Lord, and before his Christ, as to whether I have taken anyone’s ox or donkey, or whether I have falsely accused anyone, or whether I have oppressed anyone, or whether I have accepted a bribe from the hand of anyone, and I will repudiate the same, this day, and I will restore it to you.”
4 And they said: 'Thou hast not defrauded us, nor oppressed us, neither hast thou taken aught of any man's hand.'
4 And they said to Samuel, Thou hast not injured us, and thou hast not oppressed us; and thou hast not afflicted us, and thou hast not taken anything from any one’s hand.
4 And they said, “You have not falsely accused us, nor oppressed us, nor have you taken anything from the hand of anyone.”
5 And he said unto them: 'YHWH is witness against you, and His anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found aught in my hand.' And they said: 'He is witness.'
5 And Samuel said to the people, The Lord is witness among you, and his anointed is witness this day, that ye have not found anything in my hand: and they said, He is witness.
5 And he said to them, “The Lord is a witness against you, and his Christ is a witness this day, that you have not found anything in my hand.” And they said, “He is the witness.”
6 And Samuel said unto the people: 'It is YHWH that made Moses and Aaron, and that brought your fathers up out of the land of Egypt.
6 And Samuel spoke to the people, saying, The Lord who appointed Moses and Aaron is witness, who brought our fathers up out of Egypt.
7 Now therefore stand still, that I may plead with you before YHWH concerning all the righteous acts of the YHWH, which He did to you and to your fathers.
7 And now stand still, and I will judge you before the Lord; and I will relate to you all the righteousness of the Lord, the things which he has wrought among you and your fathers.
7 Now therefore, stand, so that I may contend in judgment against you before the Lord, about all the mercies of the Lord, which he has given to you and to your fathers
8 When Jacob was come into Egypt, then your fathers cried unto YHWH, and the YHWH sent Moses and Aaron, who brought forth your fathers out of Egypt, and they were made to dwell in this place.
8 When Jacob and his sons went into Egypt, and Egypt humbled them, then our fathers cried to the Lord, and the Lord sent Moses and Aaron; and they brought our fathers out of Egypt, and he made them to dwell in this place.
8 How Jacob entered into Egypt, and your fathers cried out to the Lord. And the Lord sent Moses and Aaron, and he led your fathers away from Egypt, and he transferred them to this place.
9 But they forgot YHWH their God, and He gave them over into the hand of Sisera, captain of the host of Hazor, and into the hand of the Philistines, and into the hand of the king of Moab, and they fought against them.
9 And they forgot the Lord their God, and he sold them into the hands of Sisara captain of the host of Jabis king of Asor, and into the hands of the Philistines, and into the hands of the king of Moab; and he fought with them.
10 And they cried unto YHWH, and said: We have sinned, because we have forsaken the YHWH, and have served the Baalim and the Ashtaroth; but now deliver us out of the hand of our enemies, and we will serve Thee.
10 But afterward, they cried out to the Lord, and they said: ‘We have sinned, because we have forsaken the Lord, and we have served the Baals and Ashtaroth. Now therefore, rescue us from the hand of our enemies, and we will serve you.’
11 And YHWH sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and delivered you out of the hand of your enemies on every side, and ye dwelt in safety.
11 And he sent Jerobaal, and Barac, and Jephthae, and Samuel, and rescued us out of the hand of our enemies round about, and ye dwelt in security.
11 And the Lord sent Jerubbaal, and Bedan, and Jephthah, and Samuel, and he rescued you from the hand of your enemies all around, and you lived in confidence.
12 And when ye saw that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon came against you, ye said unto me: Nay, but a king shall reign over us; when YHWH your God was your king.
12 And ye saw that Naas king of the children of Ammon came against you, and ye said, Nay, none but a king shall reign over us; whereas the Lord our God is our king.
12 Then, seeing that Nahash, the king of the sons of Ammon, had arrived against you, you said to me, ‘By no means! Instead, a king shall reign over us,’ even though the Lord your God was reigning over you.
13 Now therefore behold the king whom ye have chosen, and whom ye have asked for; and, behold, YHWH hath set a king over you.
13 And now behold the king whom ye have chosen; and behold, the Lord has set a king over you.
13 Now therefore, your king is present, whom you chose and requested. Behold, the Lord has given you a king.
14 If ye will fear YHWH, and serve Him, and hearken unto His voice, and not rebel against the commandment of the YHWH, and both ye and also the king that reigneth over you be followers of the LORD your God--;
14 If ye should fear the Lord, and serve him, and hearken to his voice, and not resist the mouth of the Lord, and ye and your king that reigns over you should follow the Lord, well.
14 If you will fear the Lord, and serve him, and listen to his voice, and not provoke the mouth of the Lord, then both you, and the king who rules over you, will be following the Lord your God.
15 but if ye will not hearken unto the voice of YHWH, but rebel against the commandment of the YHWH, then shall the hand of the LORD be against you, and against your fathers.
15 But if ye should not hearken to the voice of the Lord, and ye should resist the mouth of the Lord, then shall the hand of the Lord be upon you and upon your king.
15 But if you will not listen to the voice of the Lord, but instead you provoke his words, then the hand of the Lord will be over you and over your fathers.
16 Now therefore stand still and see this great thing, which YHWH will do before your eyes.
16 And now stand still, and see this great thing, which the Lord will do before your eyes.
17 Is it not wheat harvest to-day? I will call unto YHWH, that He may send thunder and rain; and ye shall know and see that your wickedness is great, which ye have done in the sight of the YHWH, in asking you a king.'
17 Behold, it is wheat harvest today; I will call to the LORD, and he shall send thunder and rain; and you shall know and see that your wickedness is great, in that you have asked for yourselves a king.
18 So Samuel called unto YHWH; and the YHWH sent thunder and rain that day; and all the people greatly feared the LORD and Samuel.
18 And Samuel called upon the Lord, and the Lord sent thunders and rain in that day; and all the people feared greatly the Lord and Samuel.
18 And Samuel cried out to the Lord, and the Lord sent thunder and rain on that day.
19 And all the people said unto Samuel: 'Pray for thy servants unto YHWH thy God, that we die not; for we have added unto all our sins this evil, to ask us a king.'
19 And all the people feared the Lord and Samuel exceedingly. And all the people said to Samuel: “Pray, on behalf of your servants, to the Lord your God, so that we may not die. For we have added to all our sins this evil, that we would petition for a king.”
19 And all the people said to Samuel. Pray for your servants before the LORD your God, that we may not die; for we have added to all our sins a great evil, in that we have asked for ourselves a king.
20 And Samuel said unto the people: 'Fear not; ye have indeed done all this evil; yet turn not aside from following YHWH, but serve the YHWH with all your heart;
20 Then Samuel said to the people: “Do not be afraid. You have done all this evil. Yet truly, do not choose to withdraw from the back of the Lord. Instead, serve the Lord with all your heart.
21 and turn ye not aside; for then should ye go after vain things which cannot profit nor deliver, for they are vain.
21 And turn not aside after the gods that are nothing, who will do nothing, and will not deliver you, because they are nothing.
21 And do not choose to turn aside after vanities, which will never benefit you, nor rescue you, since they are empty.
22 For YHWH will not forsake His people for His great name's sake; because it hath pleased the YHWH to make you a people unto Himself.
22 For the Lord will not cast off his people for his great name’s sake, because the Lord graciously took you to himself for a people.
22 And the Lord will not abandon his people, because of his great name. For the Lord has sworn to make you his people.
23 Moreover as for me, far be it from me that I should sin against YHWH in ceasing to pray for you; but I will instruct you in the good and the right way.
23 And far be it from me to sin against the Lord in ceasing to pray for you: but I will serve the Lord, and shew you the good and the right way.
23 So then, far be it from me, this sin against the Lord, that I would cease to pray for you. And so, I will teach you the good and upright way.
24 Only fear YHWH, and serve Him in truth with all your heart; for consider how great things He hath done for you.
24 Therefore, fear the Lord, and serve him in truth and from your whole heart. For you have seen the great works that he has done among you.
24 Only revere the LORD, and serve him in truth with all your heart and with all your soul; for consider what great things he has done for you.
25 But if ye shall still do wickedly, ye shall be swept away, both ye and your king.'
25 But if ye continue to do evil, then shall ye and your king be consumed.
